Issue

Statistics Canada detected an error in the Income Reference Guide, Census of Population, 2021 released on July 13, 2022. More specifically, the error has an impact on the data in the following table:

  • Table 5, "Impact of edit and imputation on number of recipients, aggregate amounts and averages by source for the population 15 years of age and older in private households, 2006, 2016 and 2021 Census"

Additionally, there is a textual error in the third paragraph of the "Impact of edit and imputation" section.

This error impacts both languages.

Table 5, "Impact of edit and imputation on number of recipients, aggregate amounts and averages by source for the population 15 years of age and older in private households, 2006, 2016 and 2021 Census":

  • Total Income, Change in number of recipients, 2021 is shown as 9.6 and should be 9.5
  • Total Income, Change in aggregate amount, 2021 is shown as 10.6 should be 8.2
  • Total Income, Change in average amount for recipients, 2021 is shown as 0.9 should be -1.2
  • Net non-farm self-employment income, Change in number of recipients, 2021 is shown as 19.0 and should be 19.5
  • Net non-farm self-employment income, Change in aggregate amount, 2021 is shown as 18.6 should be 18.7
  • Net non-farm self-employment income, Change in average amount for recipients, 2021 is shown as -0.3 should be -0.7

Incorrect text:

In the 2021 Census, the number of total income recipients increased by 9.6% during edit and imputation. The aggregate amount of total income in the file increased by 10.6%. Average total income increased marginally by 0.9% or $472.

Correct text:

In the 2021 Census, the number of total income recipients increased by 9.5% during edit and imputation. The aggregate amount of total income in the file increased by 8.2%. Average total income decreased marginally by 1.2% or $662.
