Description
Figure 1.5 demonstrates the breakdown of immigrants, non-immigrants and non-permanent residents in Canada by place of birth. It broadly delineates them according to whether they were born inside or outside Canada.
The population in private households can be categorized as:
- Non-immigrant population (persons who are Canadian citizens by birth): non-immigrant population born in Canada (part of the Canadian-born population) or non-immigrant population born outside Canada (part of the foreign-born population).
- Immigrant population (persons who are, or have been, landed immigrants/permanent residents): immigrant population born outside Canada (part of foreign-born population) or immigrant population born in Canada (part of Canadian-born population).
- Non-permanent residents (part of the foreign-born population). A non-permanent resident refers to a person from another country who, at the time of the survey, has a work or study permit or who is a refugee claimant, and any non-Canadian-born family member living in Canada with them.
