Dwelling counts for 1901, 1911 and 1921 include both occupied private dwellings and occupied collective dwellings.

The dwelling count for Canada excludes British Columbia and Manitoba in 1871.

The dwelling count for Canada excludes Yukon in 1901.

The dwelling count for Canada excludes Yukon and the Northwest Territories in 1911, 1921, 1931, 1941 and 1951.

The total dwelling counts in 1956 for Yukon and the Northwest Territories were distributed across the two areas based on the ratio of counts of occupied private dwellings in these territories observed in 1961 for presentation purposes.

In this year (1851 or 1861), the Province of Canada was a British colony that included part of the area that is now Ontario and Quebec. New Brunswick and Nova Scotia were also British colonies. The data shown are for these four regions, corresponding to the four provinces present at the beginning of the Canadian Confederation in 1867.

In this year (1871), the Northwest Territories also included what are now Saskatchewan, Alberta and Nunavut, and the northern parts of Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec. The Northwest Territories and Manitoba joined Confederation in 1870, followed by British Columbia in 1871. No data are available from the 1871 Census for the Northwest Territories.
