Definition

Generation status

'Generation status' refers to whether or not the person or the person's parents were born in Canada.

Values

  1. Total - Generation status Footnote 1
  2. First generation Footnote 2
  3. Second generation Footnote 3
  4. Both parents born outside Canada
  5. One parent born outside Canada and one parent born in Canada
  6. Third generation or more Footnote 6

'First generation' includes persons who were born outside Canada. For the most part, these are people who are now, or once were, immigrants to Canada.
