  • In 2016, the enumerated population of Canada was 35,151,728 which represents a change of 5.0% from 2011.
  • Population growth in Canada between 2011 and 2016 was the highest among G7 countries.
  • For the first time since they joined confederation, the three Prairie provinces showed the highest rates of population growth among the provinces between 2011 and 2016.
  • The land area of Canada is 8,965,588.85 square kilometres and the population density was 3.9 people per square kilometre.

Canada – Census metropolitan areas (CMAs), census agglomerations (CAs) and regions outside CMAs and CAs

In 2016, 83.2% of the population of Canada lived inside a census metropolitan area (CMA) or census agglomeration (CA). That represents 29,232,957 persons.

The number of persons living outside a census metropolitan area (CMA) and a census agglomeration (CA) was 5,918,771, which accounts for 16.8% of the population.
