In 2011, Amherst (Town) had a population of 9,717, representing a percentage change of 2.2% from 2006. This compares to the national average growth of 5.9%.

Land area is 12.02 square kilometres with a population density of 808.4 persons per square kilometre. This compares to the provincial land area of 52,939.44 square kilometres with a population density of 17.4 persons per square kilometre.
