Figure 2
Proportion of the population with a mother tongue other than English or French by languages spoken at home, 2001, 2006 and 2011

Description

This figure presents the language(s) spoken at home by people in Quebec whose mother tongue is neither English nor French, for 2001, 2006 and 2011. For each given census year, the first column indicates the proportion of the persons who speak only one language other than English or French at home, the second column provides the proportion of the persons who speak English at home, the third column, the proportion of the persons who speak French at home, and the last column indicates the proportion of the persons who speak both English and French (multiple response). The second column distinguishes the persons who speak English most often at home from those who speak English on a regular basis as a secondary language. Similarly, the third column separates the persons who speak French most often at home from those who speak French on a regular basis as a secondary language. Lastly, in the fourth column, we distinguish the persons who speak English and French most often from those who speak English and French on a regular basis as secondary languages. The second column presents all cases that mention English, excluding those in the fourth column. As well, the third column presents all the cases that mention French, excluding those in the fourth column. In 2001, 32.8% of the population with a mother tongue other than English or French in Quebec spoke only one 'other' language at home; 22.1% spoke English most often and 11.9% spoke English on a regular basis, for a total of 34.0% who spoke English at home; 20.4% spoke French most often and 14.3% spoke French on a regular basis, for a total of 34.7% who spoke French at home; 1.9% spoken English and French most often and 2.7% spoke English and French on a regular basis. In 2011, 30.5% of the population with a mother tongue other than English or French in Quebec spoke only one 'other' language at home; 19.7% spoke English most often and 10.2% spoke English on a regular basis, for a total of 29.9% who spoke English at home; 24.1% spoke French most often and 15.9% spoke French on a regular basis, for a total of 40.0% who spoke French at home; 2.5% spoke English and French most often and 2.9% spoke English and French on a regular basis.
