Description

Figure 2 shows the proportion of the population living in rural areasFootnote1 in the G8 countries and five other selected countriesFootnote2 that are involved in discussions with the G8 on various issues (India, China, South Africa, Mexico and Brazil). The G8 countries appear on the left, from highest to lowest proportion of population in rural areas, namely Japan (33%), Italy (32%), Russia (27%), Germany (26%), France (22%), Canada (19%), the United States (18%) and the United Kingdom (10%). The five other countries appear on the right, from highest to lowest proportion of people in rural areas, namely India (70%), China (55%), South Africa (50%), Mexico (22%) and Brazil (14%).
