Population share of Canada's regions, 1951 to 2011

Description

This chart shows how the population share of the different regions of Canada evolved from 1951 to 2011. The population share steadily declined in the Atlantic provinces, going from 11.6% in 1951 to 7.0% in 2011, and in Quebec, going from 28.9% in 1951 to 23.6% in 2011. It steadily increased in Ontario, going from 32.8% in 1951 to 38.4% in 2011, and in British Columbia, going from 8.3% in 1951 to 13.1% in 2011. In the Prairie provinces, the population share varied from one census to another, sometimes upward and sometimes downward, going from 18.2% in 1951 to 17.6% in 2011. The population share of the territories went from 0.2% in 1951 to 0.3% in 2011.
